Glamorgan Vs Dyfed

South Wales Seniors League

Following a loss to Brecon and Radnor last season, the SWSL team had a disappointing loss to Dyfed at Cardigan, but it can be seen that this new league has increased the competitiveness of both Dyfed and Brecon and Radnor bringing new players forward who would otherwise have not considered playing a friendly match.

Despite a beautiful summer day with the superb views the Cardigan Golf club always offers neither could spark the Glamorgan fightback needed after finishing the morning session 3 to 2 down. With eight links players in the team and two parkland players who regularly play the nearby links courses, Dyfed wisely chose a links course to give themselves the best opportunity of victory. The victory for Dyfed was well deserved with some comfortable wins. The return match at Mond Valley should prove more of a test for any links players in the Dyfed team and it will be interesting to see how they handle a parkland course. As always, our thanks go to Cardigan golf club, Captain and members for the use of their excellent course and to the greens staff who prepared top quality greens on the day.

Senior Channel League Match

Glamorgan Vs Cornwall

Southerndown Golf Club 28th June 2019

Glamorgan were hopeful of following up on a successful visit to Devon, with a home win against Cornwall. It was not to be however and despite a half from Chris Glenny and Kevin Spear and an excellent win for Gwyn Jones and Adrian Bragg, Glamorgan went to lunch 1.5 to 3.5 down.

In the afternoon singles, excellent wins for Gwyn Jones, Adrian Bragg and Kevin Spear failed to stop Cornwall’s charge. The remaining matches were a tale of come backs by enlarge with too many going to the visitors with the final score being 6.5 to 8.5. Maybe it was the two links specialists in our team, as opposed to the seven in the Cornwall team that tipped the odds is debatable, however, we were basically outplayed by a team whose handicaps were, on average, higher than ours.

The Senior Channel League is wide open again and there is much for the selectors to consider and the team to play for in the next match against Gloucestershire at the Kendleshire golf club.

Thanks go to Southerndown Golf Club for their hospitality and consideration with regards to this fixture.

South Wales Seniors League 2019 Season

Match Report Brecon and Radnorshire v Glamorgan at Builth Wells Golf Club

Friday 24th May 2019

A closely fought match t Builth Wells ended in a 9-6 victory for Glamorgan.

Leading 3-2 after the morning foursomes with 2 wins and 2 halves, the match was levelled after the first 3 singles matches of the afternoon, but the strength of the Glamorgan lower order took the match away from a strong Brecon and Radnor team.

The Builth Wells course was very dry and both teams found it difficult to adjust to the links-like conditions. Good wins for Pat Regan at the top of the order, Nick Caulfield who came back from 2 down with 3 to play, and from the Whitchurch contingent of Martin Brock, Eric Torjussen and Darryl Bailyes made this a very satisfying win in the first SWSL contest of the season.

SCL Match Against Devon At Tiverton Golf Club

Thursday 16th May 2019

Having hosted Devon at a James Braid course in Neath in 2018, Devon responded by inviting Glamorgan to another Braid course in Tiverton. Last year Glamorgan were successful and so it was again this year in our away match. Devon again fielded a strong low handicap team with scratch golfers and a highest handicap of 3.

The morning foursomes was a tight affair around Tiverton’s tree lined fairways with solid wins for both Jeff Thomas & Richard Jones, and Nick Grimm. & Brian Rigby. Two of the other matches were a loss to Glamorgan but by the narrowest of margins of one hole. The half from Mike Gwyther and Keith Stimpson meant that honours were even at the midday lunch break.

In the afternoon, Richard Jones led the line convincingly with a solid win over Paul Newcome. Jeff Thomas had to give best to Tim Aggett after a very tight match but Nick Grimm. at 3, won by one hole against local Tiverton man Tony Alsop giving us the lead. A loss at 4 mean that Keith Stimpson’s win over Richard Ward put At back in the lead. Mike Gwyther went down to Dave Eva, but this was nullified by new man Gwyn Jones winning handsomely 6 & 4. Brian Rigby was next to finish fighting back from two down with three to play, to get a half.

This left two matches out there and Al to play for, looking At the overall match was heading for a half. Steve Watkins was having a hard time against the evergreen Paul Vickery eventually going down and this left Kevin Spear as the last man standing, but he brought home the bacon with a 4 with 3 win.

A close match as would be expected against the, ever strong, Devon team and last years Senior Channel League winners.

There is a long way to go this season of course, but this win against our closest rGals for the past few seasons does mean we can look forward to this season without thinking we have to make up ground.
